What is AEO? Getting your town into AI answers

People now ask AI where to go. If your businesses aren't the answer, they don't exist. Here is what AEO is and why it matters for your community right now.

Here is a habit that barely existed a couple of years ago. Someone opens ChatGPT, or asks Google's AI, or talks to the assistant on their phone, and says: "Where should I take my mom for lunch in town?" A few seconds later the AI gives them an answer. Not ten blue links. An answer. Two or three specific places, with a reason for each.

Whichever businesses the AI names just won. The ones it skips were never even considered. That is the shift, and it is why a new term has shown up next to SEO.

AEO is Answer Engine Optimization: making sure the AI names your local businesses when someone asks where to go.

Why this is different from a normal search

A normal search gives people a list and lets them choose. There is room on a list. Even the fifth or sixth result gets seen.

An AI answer is not a list. It is a recommendation. It usually names just a handful of businesses, and most people take the first one. The shelf got a lot shorter, and the businesses that are not on it are invisible in a way they never were before. For a small town, that is either a threat or a head start, depending on whether anyone is paying attention.

How the AI decides who to name

Good news for your businesses: the AI is not doing anything mysterious. It reads what the web already says about a business and repeats it. So it leans on the same signals that good SEO is built on:

  • Clear, consistent information. The AI trusts a business whose name, location, hours, and category line up everywhere it looks. Messy or missing details make it hesitate, and a hesitant AI just names someone else.
  • A clear description of what you do and who you serve. The AI matches the question to businesses that plainly say they fit. "Family-friendly Mexican restaurant in downtown" is easy to recommend. A blank profile is not.
  • Reviews and reputation. The AI reads reviews the way a person skims them. Businesses that people clearly like, and that respond to their customers, get named more often.

In other words, a business with a thin or neglected online presence does not just rank lower. It gets left out of the answer entirely. The AI cannot recommend what it cannot understand.

The key insight: AEO and SEO are not two different jobs. They run on the same foundation. Get a business's information clean, clear, and well-reviewed, and it starts showing up in both regular search and AI answers at the same time.

Why now, and not next year

This is early. Most small businesses have no idea they can be included in or left out of AI answers, and almost no community is helping them get ready. That is exactly why it is an opportunity. The towns that get their businesses AI-ready now will own the recommendation before their competitors even understand the game changed.

You do not have to predict the future to act on this. You just have to make sure your businesses are described clearly, listed consistently, and well-reviewed. That work pays off in today's search and in tomorrow's AI answers, so there is no risk in starting now.

What a community should do about it

The move is the same one that makes sense for plain SEO, and Digital Facade already does it. Score every business on how clear and complete their online presence is. Hand each one a short list of fixes. Re-score every month so nothing slides back. Do that across a whole downtown and you are not just chasing rankings. You are making your entire community the answer when someone asks where to go.

The question people ask their phone is simple: "Where should I go?" Your job is to make sure the answer is your Main Street.
